Elmiron Injuries and Side Effects
Maculopathy is an eye disorder that affects the macula, which is the central part of your retina. Maculopathy is known to be a significant cause of blindness. In addition to pigmentary maculopathy. The Elmiron lawsuits claim that long-term exposure to the drug can cause this eye disorder as well as other significant vision problems.
The Key Legal Issue
The American Academy of Ophthalmology published an article in 2018 outlining the treatment of six patients at Emory Eye Center between 2015 and 2017. These patients suffered from pigmentary maculopathy and the cause was unclear. All six patients were long-time users of Elmiron, prescribed to treat the pain caused by their IC.
Then, in 2019, an addendum was made to the original report. The update noted that ten more patients at Emory Eye Center had been diagnosed with the same issue.
Unfortunately, in addition to the horrific side effect of permanent vision loss, Elmiron has not even been proven effective in treating interstitial cystitis. The earliest clinical trials for the IC drug were less than conclusive, and one FDA reviewer stated, “The evidence of [the] efficacy of Elmiron for the treatment of interstitial cystitis is very weak.”
The major legal issue being addressed by the Elmiron lawsuits is that the Elmiron manufacturer failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the potential vision-related side effects. This negligence led to widespread damages and loss of vision in patients who were prescribed Elmiron.
